Issue 11: The Connecticut Trolley Museum

The Conncecticut Trolley Museum

On a rain drenched weekend in mid August your rolling reporter, 'railpipe,' suffered the indignities of traveling on a slow motion Vermonter from New York City to Western Massachusetts to begin yet another railnutter rove through Southern New England in Northeastern America with his rail pal and confidant Monsieur C. As rain cascaded relentlessly, we arrived at The Connecticut Trolley Museum just past noon only to find it closed due to the weather and mechanical concerns. With Monsieur C. cavalierly taking the lead, we undaunted rail mavens marched into the trolley barn and out of the rain.

And there we met a trolley man so dedicated that he took 2600 out of the barn and gave us the full 3 mile ride, lecture, and an hours long walking tour of the entire facility. Based along the rout of the Hartford and Springfield Electric Railway’s East Windsor line, the Museum was founded in 1940; it’s l.5 mile track passes a small airfield with its own trolley stop and the area where many of the original cars were burned after the line went bankrupt in 1926. The single track has passing sidings with spring switches.
